When a pool or spa barrier does not meet the required standard, you will receive a detailed pool barrier rectification report within 24 hours of the inspection. Homeowners, builders, and tradespeople consistently tell us it is the clearest report they have worked from.

If you are unsure whether your pool fence or spa barrier will pass a formal pool compliance inspection, book a preliminary consultation first. We visit your property, carry out a thorough pool safety audit of your barriers, identify any issues, and explain the most cost-effective ways to fix them before you pay for a formal certificate inspection. This way you only book the official inspection when you are ready.

Getting pool and spa barrier compliance right often involves a fencing contractor, builder, or handyperson. Our inspector can attend at the same time as your tradesperson to clarify pool enclosure inspection standards, answer questions about pool gate self-closing mechanism requirements, and confirm that work in progress will meet the Victorian pool fence regulations before it is finalised. This prevents costly rework.

Once your barriers pass the inspection, we issue the pool safety certificate lodgement-ready document directly to you. It is formatted correctly for your local council. We have worked across more than 30 council areas in Victoria and understand the specific submission requirements of each one. We can walk you through the lodgement process if you need it.

What happens after I register my pool or spa?

After registering your pool or spa, the relevant council is required to send you written notification confirming:

  • that your pool or spa has been registered

  • your right to appeal to the Building Appeals Board (BAB) in relation to the council’s determination of the date of construction of the pool or spa
  • the date by which the first or next certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged with the relevant council.
How can I find out the date of construction of my pool or spa?

Upon application for registration of the swimming pool or spa, Council will determine the date of construction and the applicable barrier standard and inform the applicant in writing.

You have up to 60 days to complete the work. Once repairs are done, we return for a re-inspection after pool repairs to confirm everything meets the standard before issuing the certificate.

How often do I need to have my pool inspected and provide a certificate of compliance to Council?

Missing either deadline can result in fines from your council under the Building Act 1993.

How does the council determine the date of construction of a swimming pool or spa?

To determine the date of construction, the council may consider any relevant information, such as the date of any building permit issued in relation to the swimming pool or spa.

This may include information provided in the registration application, the council’s records (such as building permit data) or other relevant information obtained by the council, including real estate listings and aerial photography.

I have recently purchased a property with a pool or spa. How can I check that it has been registered?

Please contact the relevant council to check if your pool or spa has been registered.
